Working in Luxembourg from Thionville: the train instead of the traffic

You’re starting a work assignment, an onboarding or a relocation in Luxembourg, and you already know what you don’t want: two hours a day stuck in the traffic jams on the A31. The good news: from Thionville, on the French side, you leave the car at the car park and reach the Grand Duchy on a direct train. Our furnished apartments, less than a 10-minute walk from Thionville station, are designed for executives, consultants and mobile professionals who want simplicity: a manageable rent on the French side, a predictable commute and quick access to the Kirchberg and Cloche d’Or business districts. Here’s why so many cross-border commuters on assignment choose Thionville as their base camp.

Why Thionville is the right base for working in Luxembourg

Thionville sits in a strategic spot on the rail line that links Lorraine to the Grand Duchy. It’s the last major French town before the border, some thirty kilometres from Luxembourg station by rail. For a professional on a medium-term assignment, the equation is simple: on the French side, you enjoy a cost of living and a rent well below those of Luxembourg City, while staying within immediate reach of your workplace.

Our apartments are aimed precisely at this audience: audit and management consultants, executives being onboarded, employees posted for the length of a project, people relocating who want a pied-à-terre before settling in for good. A furnished, fully equipped, move-in-ready studio or apartment spares you the complications of a standard lease, the cost of buying furniture and the hassle of setting up utility contracts. You arrive, you drop your bags, and you’re up and running the very next morning.

Less than a 10-minute walk from the station: the direct train to Luxembourg

This is the key point. Our apartments in central Thionville, on rue de la Tour and rue Brûlée, are less than a 10-minute walk from the station via the passerelle de l’Europe, a fully pedestrian link that spans the tracks without any detour. On a scooter, count on less than 3 minutes — and you can fold it up and store it in the apartment. After that, the train does the rest.

The Thionville–Luxembourg line is one of the busiest in the region: the direct trip takes about 25 minutes, with several trains an hour at peak times and a service that runs, broadly, from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. In other words, you no longer plan your day around a single timetable: you catch the train that suits you, morning or evening. For a cross-border commuter on assignment, this level of service changes everything: no traffic-jam stress, a stable journey time, and a few real minutes to read your emails or catch your breath before the day begins.

Free public transport in Luxembourg: what it changes day to day

Here’s the perk that many new cross-border commuters discover with delight. Since 1 March 2020, all public transport has been free across the whole of Luxembourg: train (2nd class), tram and bus. Once you’ve crossed the border, you pay nothing more to get around.

In practice, when you arrive at Luxembourg station, the tram takes you to the business districts for free. The line links the Stade de Luxembourg to the airport via the station and the centre, so it serves both the Cloche d’Or and the Kirchberg plateau, without you ever reaching for your wallet. One honest caveat: on the French side, the TER SNCF ticket is still payable up to the border. The Thionville–Luxembourg trip isn’t entirely free, then, but the whole Luxembourg leg (tram, bus, connections) is completely free. For a TER season-ticket holder, it’s a mobility budget cut to the bare minimum.

The cross-border bus from Place de la Liberté

The train isn’t your only option. From Thionville, cross-border RGTR buses round out the service for destinations less well covered by rail, notably departing from the Place de la Liberté area. They remain slower than the TER, so keep them for connections the train doesn’t cover directly. For most trips to Luxembourg City, the train is still the better option. RegioZone fares and buying arrangements (ticket to be validated before boarding) change regularly, so it’s best to check them on the RGTR website before your first assignment.

Kirchberg, Cloche d’Or: the ecosystem where you’ll be working

If you’re starting an assignment in Luxembourg, your office is probably at the Kirchberg or the Cloche d’Or. The Kirchberg plateau concentrates the major banks, part of the insurance sector and the European institutions; the Big Four audit and advisory firms (Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, EY) are present there, some based on the Cloche d’Or / Gasperich side.

What matters for you: both of these business hubs are served by the free tram from the central station. You step off the TER, hop on the tram and arrive at the foot of your tower without touching your wallet or hunting for parking at €30 a day. For a consultant juggling client meetings from one end of the district to the other, that ease of movement is genuine working comfort.

Can you reach Kirchberg and Cloche d’Or without a car?

Absolutely. From Luxembourg station, the free tram links the Stade de Luxembourg to the airport via the station and the centre, so it serves both the Cloche d’Or and the Kirchberg plateau. You combine the TER from Thionville with the tram, without ever reaching for your wallet on the Luxembourg side.

Train or car — which is better for commuting to work in Luxembourg?

For most destinations in Luxembourg City, the train is more predictable. By car, reckon on about 44 km and 32 minutes off-peak for Thionville–Luxembourg, but the trip can climb to 60–90 minutes at cross-border rush hour. The train, by contrast, keeps a stable journey time of about 25 minutes and frees you from driving.
