The Voie Bleue (V50): 700 km Along the Water, from Luxembourg to Lyon

The Voie Bleue – Moselle-Saône à vélo is a national cycle route (code V50) linking Apach, on the Luxembourg border, to Lyon over roughly 700 km. Built largely on former towpaths, it offers an almost flat profile and long stretches reserved for non-motorised travel: it first runs alongside the Moselle, then the Canal des Vosges, before following the Saône down to Lyon. It’s an ideal route for a first taste of long-distance cycling, with no mountains or heavy traffic to worry about.

On the ground, the route is signposted V50, but you’ll also come across older names inherited from its history (véloroute Charles le Téméraire, Échappée Bleue): they all refer to the same route. Between Thionville and Metz, the cycleway passes through a remarkable heritage landscape: the lock-bridges of Thionville, masterpieces of military engineering, the port of Illange and the former U4 blast furnace, before reaching Metz via its lakes and wetlands, just steps from the Saint-Étienne cathedral and the Centre Pompidou-Metz.

Garche: the Voie Bleue Less Than 5 km Away, the Ideal Cycling Base

This is the standout selling point for a cycling stay in the area: Garche sits less than 5 km from the Voie Bleue route. In other words, a few minutes of pedalling in the morning is all it takes to reach the cycleway beside the Moselle, and to head home in the evening without loading the bikes back into the car.

In this area, the F2 in Cattenom (from €65) makes a simple, well-located base. For families or groups of cyclists, the Nid des Cigognes in Garche (up to 8 guests, from €115) lets everyone set off on their bikes from under one roof. And to recover after a long stage, L’Instant Bien-Être in Garche (from €110) plays on its hot tub / balneo spa and sauna: just the thing to soothe tired legs before you set off again. This fixed home-base approach is perfect for hub-and-spoke stays, where you string together day loops without ever unpacking your bags.

Storing and Recharging Your Bikes: Bike Room and Sockets for E-Bikes

A bike — and even more so an e-bike — should be kept under cover and recharged overnight. Our accommodations in Manom, Yutz and Bellecroix each offer a space to store and recharge two e-bikes: your machines spend the night in the dry, batteries plugged in, ready for the next day’s stage. On the Metz side, the Studio Bellecroix (from €57) makes a handy stopover at the southern end of the Thionville-Metz section.

In Thionville itself, the town-centre properties (Ville de Coeur, F2 near the station, Studio Miami, Nid Douillé) don’t have a private bike garage. But two secure options are just minutes away: the paid bike storage at Thionville station, or the Citéos bike box at the Parking de la Liberté. Real peace of mind when you’re travelling with a valuable e-bike.

Towards Luxembourg and Germany: Heading up the Moselle

Heading north from Thionville, the Voie Bleue runs towards the border. Reckon on about 28 km to Sierck-les-Bains and nearly 31 km to Apach, at the spot known as the Trois Frontières (Three Borders), just 1 km from Germany and Luxembourg. Along the way the scenery changes: past Contz-les-Bains, the vineyard slopes of the Moselle valley come into view.

At the border, the cycleway connects naturally with neighbouring networks. On the German side, it continues as the Moselradweg, which follows the Moselle from Perl to Koblenz, at the confluence with the Rhine, over roughly 250 km. On the Luxembourg side, you switch onto the Piste cyclable des Trois Rivières (PC3), 89 km along the Moselle and then the Sûre, from Schengen to Vianden via Remich and Grevenmacher, in the heart of the Moselle wine region. The Voie Bleue is a national cycle route (V50): it has no EuroVelo number of its own, but it links up with the major European routes, notably EuroVelo 5 and EuroVelo 17 (ViaRhôna).

Towards Metz, the Vosges and the Far South (Lyon, the Mediterranean)

Heading south, the Thionville-Metz section runs about 33 km of greenway, mostly along the Moselle and the canal, taking in the port of Illange, the U4 blast furnace and the lakes on the approach to Metz. A short, easy-rolling stage, ideal for a first day of touring or an out-and-back ride.

Beyond that, the Voie Bleue carries on towards Pont-à-Mousson, Nancy and Charmes, then follows the Canal des Vosges through towpath scenery to the foothills of the Vosges: the Moselle rises at the Col de Bussang. Further down the route, the cycleway joins the Saône and then Lyon, with links to EuroVelo 5 and EuroVelo 17 (ViaRhôna) heading for the Mediterranean. And from Lyon, the ViaRhôna (EuroVelo 17) runs all the way down to the Mediterranean. So from your Moselle accommodation you could, in theory, get on your bike and not stop until you reach the sea.

Cycling Loops from Your Base (1 to 3 Days)

The beauty of a home base is that it turns the cycleway into a day-trip playground. Here are a few loop ideas starting from the area (distances and stages to fine-tune on the ground):

  • Three Borders loop (1 day): Thionville, the Voie Bleue along the Moselle, Sierck-les-Bains and its castle, then Schengen or Apach before turning back. Around 55 to 60 km, perfect on an e-bike.
  • Medieval getaway to Rodemack (half-day, family-friendly): from Thionville towards Cattenom and the medieval town of Rodemack, using the Boler circuit of about 17 km to loop back through fields and villages.
  • Luxembourg vineyards (1 to 2 days): via the PC3, from Schengen to Remich and Grevenmacher, between the Moselle and the vineyard slopes, with the option of a night back at base before returning.
  • Thionville-Metz out-and-back (1 to 2 days): 33 km of greenway on the way there, time to explore Metz, then ride back or take the TER regional train (bike carriage to be checked with the operator).

A few sections switch riverbanks via the road between Sierck-les-Bains, Contz-les-Bains and Malling: stay alert on these short shared stretches.
