Heritage itinerary (2 days): Metz, castles and Passionnément Moselle sites

Day 1 — Metz, the city of light

Start with Saint-Étienne Cathedral, nicknamed the “Good Lord’s Lantern”: with nearly 6,500 m² of stained glass spanning the 13th to the 21st century, including works by Marc Chagall, it boasts one of the largest expanses of stained glass in France. Then wander through the pedestrian centre, beneath the arcades of Place Saint-Louis, on to the covered market and the German-inspired Imperial Quarter from the early 20th century. A few minutes from the station, the Centre Pompidou-Metz, with its architecture by Shigeru Ban, closes the day on a contemporary note.

Day 2 — Castles and Passionnément Moselle sites

Head north to Malbrouck Castle, in Manderen, one of the few fully restored 15th-century fortified castles in Lorraine, which hosts major exhibitions every year — currently a show devoted to Georges Méliès, on until the end of October. Continue along the Passionnément Moselle network: the Laquenexy Fruit Gardens, the Domaine de Lindre with its unspoilt nature, or the Robert Schuman House in Scy-Chazelles. Along the way, the Château de la Grange, in Manom, reveals its 18th-century silhouette and grounds from the outside; the interior isn’t open to visitors at present, but the setting is worth the stop — and our Manom properties are right nearby.

Nature and family itinerary (2 to 3 days): Amnéville and the great outdoors

Amnéville, the City of Leisure

One of a kind, Amnéville-les-Thermes brings together on a single site a zoo of nearly 2,000 animals (with its dinosaur trail), the Snowhall and its indoor ski slope open all year round, a treetop adventure park, a cinema complex and thermal baths. A few kilometres away, the Walygator Grand Est park, in Maizières-lès-Metz, adds roller coasters and live shows for thrill-seekers (season from April to November).

A day in the open air

To catch your breath, head for the lakes and cycle routes that line the Moselle. The Cattenom area has a lake prized for hiking and lakeside walks, as well as for sailing — an ideal nature break between two visits, on foot or by bike, with the family. Plan on one or two days of parks and a day in nature to balance your stay. For larger groups, Le Grand 8 (Metz, 8 people) and the Nid des Cigognes (Garche, 8 people) offer the space you need to recharge after a full day.

Memory and industry itinerary: Ligne Maginot and the U4 blast furnace

Fort du Hackenberg, the giant of the Ligne Maginot

In Veckring, the Fort du Hackenberg is the largest structure on the Ligne Maginot: nearly 10 km of galleries and combat blocks, with a guided tour of around 2 hours 30, part of it aboard a small vintage electric train. It stays cool inside all year round, so bring something warm — and be sure to book ahead.

Fort du Galgenberg, an intimate discovery

Still around Cattenom, the Fort du Galgenberg offers a more low-key take on the Ligne Maginot, with tours arranged on request. Our F2 Cattenom and Nid des Cigognes properties, in the same building less than 5 minutes from the Cattenom nuclear power plant, make an ideal base for enthusiasts.

U4 blast furnace, the steel giant

In Uckange, in the Fensch valley, the U4 blast furnace park preserves the last of the former works’ six furnaces. Shut down in 1991 and opened to the public in 2007, this colossus over 70 metres tall can be visited by day depending on the schedule, sometimes guided by former steelworkers, then blazes into light at nightfall beneath an artistic illumination.
